The Melt's bold expansion plan targets 85 locations by 2026

The Melt, a fast-casual chain famous for its MeltBurger and melted comfort foods, has seen strong growth in recent years. Since its launch in 2011 with a single San Francisco location, the brand has expanded steadily—now aiming for 85 company-owned restaurants within five years. Franchising is also set to begin in late 2026 as part of its broader expansion plans.

Founded by Jonathan Kaplan, The Melt started with no existing branches in 2011. Under CEO Ralph Bower, the company has since boosted its average unit volume from around $1.5 million pre-pandemic to over $3.5 million today. Same-store sales rose by roughly 5% in 2025, continuing a decade-long trend of positive customer traffic.

The brand's core mission is delivering an 'I Love It Here' experience to every guest. This principle shapes all decisions, from restaurant design to menu updates. Bower reinforces this focus by quizzing staff about the goal during visits—rewarding correct answers with a $20 bill. Employees are also reminded twice daily in each location. The Melt recently opened its 19th restaurant and plans seven more in Southern California this year, all company-owned. With franchising on the horizon, the chain is preparing for its next phase of growth.

The Melt's expansion comes alongside rising sales and a clear focus on customer experience. By 2026, the brand expects to operate 85 company-owned sites before introducing franchising. The 'I Love It Here' ethos remains central as the chain grows further.
