German Wood Packaging Sector Tackles Regulation, Geopolitics, and Digital Innovation
Around 140 members of the German Wood Packaging, Pallets, and Export Packaging Association (HPE) met in Mainz for their annual spring conference. The event covered regulatory updates, geopolitical challenges, and the role of digital innovation in the sector’s future. The conference opened with discussions on the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Marcus Kirschner, HPE’s managing director, and Dr. Patrick Krampitz from Pauly Rechtsanwälte explained its legal requirements. Many practical questions about its implementation remain unanswered.
Geopolitical risks and their effects on supply chains were another focus. Retired Lieutenant General Christian Badia and Rob Driessen of the CONNEC3 Group addressed timber market volatility and strategies for resilience. Gordon Schnieder, the designated minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate, also joined to discuss opportunities and challenges for SMEs.
Digital advancements took centre stage as well. Experts highlighted 3D design software and AI tools as vital for the industry’s progress. The HPE also announced a new 150-page guide to help businesses comply with the PPWR.
The HPECycle network, a system for returning and repairing used pallets, was noted for its expansion. It may soon function as an extended producer responsibility (EPR) organisation under Germany’s Packaging Act. The conference provided a platform for industry leaders to share insights on regulation, geopolitics, and technology. The HPE’s new guide and the growing HPECycle network aim to support businesses in adapting to upcoming changes. Digital innovation remains a priority for the sector’s development.
