JetBlue and United's Blue Sky alliance faces regulatory hurdles amid competition concerns
JetBlue and United Airlines have announced a new partnership called the Blue Sky alliance. The agreement includes slot swaps at key New York airports and expanded flight options. However, its future remains uncertain as regulators have yet to approve it. The Blue Sky alliance would allow JetBlue to gain more slots at Newark Airport. In return, United would resume services at JFK with up to seven daily round-trip flights by 2027. Both airlines state they will stay competitors while offering more choices and loyalty perks for passengers.
Spirit Airlines has opposed the deal, filing a complaint with the Department of Transportation. It claims the partnership would make United the dominant player, leading to higher fares and less competition. Senator Richard Blumenthal has also raised concerns about reduced options and rising costs for travellers.
The proposed alliance comes after a US District judge ruled that JetBlue’s earlier Northeast Alliance with American Airlines broke antitrust laws. That decision cited harm to competition and fewer choices for passengers. The Department of Transportation has not yet decided on the Blue Sky partnership. Travellers may need to consider that the deal could still be blocked. If approved, it would introduce new flight options and shared loyalty benefits between JetBlue and United.
