Palm Springs mourns 'Mr. Palm Springs' as his $19.5M estate hits the market
Harold Matzner, known as 'Mr. Palm Springs', has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of business success and philanthropy. His estate, a luxurious 1.5-acre retreat, is now on the market for $19.5 million, with proceeds set to benefit a local charity. Born into a struggling family in New Jersey, Matzner initially aspired to be a sports writer. He later moved to Palm Springs, where he built a commercial empire. In 1986, he bought a stucco-clad house designed by Laszlo Sandor for around $4 million. The property spans nearly 16,000 square feet, featuring 11 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms.
Matzner pioneered free weekly advertising newspapers, a venture that grew into CBA Industries. He also founded Spencer’s Restaurant, naming it after his Siberian husky. His contributions extended beyond business, as he donated over $85 million to local charities during his 40 years in Palm Springs.
In 1999, he rescued the Palm Springs International Film Festival, investing over $12 million to turn it into a glamorous event. His efforts earned him a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in 2006. The sale of his grand estate will support a local charity, continuing his lifelong commitment to giving back. Matzner’s impact on Palm Springs, through business and philanthropy, remains a lasting part of the city’s history.
