Saskatchewan's Premier Moe secures nuclear and defence deals in Europe

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is currently on a four-country trade mission to strengthen economic ties with Europe. The trip aligns with the G7 Leaders' Summit in Évian, France, highlighting growing connections between Canada and the European Union. During the mission, Moe signed a memorandum of understanding with the Czech Republic. The agreement aims to boost trade, with a particular focus on nuclear energy. He also visited Poland to promote nuclear energy, mining, and agricultural supplies.

Moe believes Saskatchewan can expand energy-related exports, including nuclear fuel, to Europe. He also sees potential for Prairie firms in the defence sector due to their manufacturing expertise. Additionally, the expansion of Manitoba’s Port of Churchill could further improve trade links between Saskatchewan and the European Union.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that ties between Canada and the EU are strengthening. This comes as Canadian company Marconi Technologies secured a defence procurement contract with the European Union. The trade mission underscores Saskatchewan’s push to diversify exports and deepen economic relationships. Moe’s discussions in Europe could lead to increased trade in nuclear energy, defence, and other key sectors. The Port of Churchill’s expansion may also play a role in facilitating these connections.
