Philippines to receive first South Korean FA-50 jets by 2028 under $700M deal

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) will take delivery of its first South Korean-made FA-50 Block 70 fighter aircraft in 2028. The acquisition forms part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Rehorizon 3 program, aimed at strengthening national defence capabilities. The deal, worth over USD700 million, covers 12 FA-50 Block 70 aircraft, with deliveries set to conclude by 2030. Two aircraft will arrive each year, ensuring a steady upgrade to the PAF’s fleet. These jets feature advanced avionics, modern radar systems, and an extended operational range.

The purchase also includes mission equipment, integrated logistics support, and a training and logistics information system. It aligns with the Department of National Defense’s Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept, enhancing the country’s air defence.

The agreement was discussed during the 27th Philippines-Republic of Korea Joint Committee Meeting on Logistics and Defense Industry Cooperation. The meeting, co-chaired by DND Assistant Secretary Rene Raoul Rommel Honasan and South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration Vice Minister Il Dong Kim, focused on defense modernisation and industry collaboration. The DND expressed gratitude to South Korea for its ongoing support of the AFP Modernization Program. The FA-50 Block 70 aircraft will bolster the PAF’s operational strength. All 12 units are scheduled for delivery by 2030, with the first batch arriving in 2028. The acquisition marks a significant step in the Philippines’ defence modernisation efforts.
