Panera Bread's $7B Growth Plan Targets Menu and Store Upgrades by 2028
Panera Bread has announced a major multimillion-dollar plan to transform its business. The company aims to reach over $7 billion in systemwide sales by 2028. This overhaul comes as part of broader industry efforts to address supply-chain issues and rising labour costs. The turnaround strategy includes a full revamp of the menu and the construction of new locations. Existing restaurants will also receive modern updates to improve their appeal. Food quality will be a priority, with enhanced bakery and beverage options on offer.
To improve customer service, Panera Bread will add more staff to front-of-house roles. The chain currently operates 2,239 bakery-cafes across North America. Notably, it remains exempt from California’s new $20 minimum wage law, which may help manage labour expenses.
The push for growth aligns with wider trends in the restaurant sector. Dine Brands Global CEO John Peyton, for example, is working to boost sales by merging IHOP and Applebee’s under a shared strategy. Panera Bread’s initiative seeks to strengthen its market position and drive long-term sales growth. The changes will focus on food quality, service, and restaurant modernisation. The company’s exemption from certain wage laws may provide a financial advantage in its turnaround efforts.
