Crypto Derivatives Crash as $1.7B Vanishes from Binance in 48 Hours
Crypto markets saw a sharp reversal in derivatives exposure last week. Major exchanges recorded some of the steepest open interest swings since April 2026. The trend extended beyond Binance, affecting multiple platforms. On Binance, Bitcoin open interest shifted dramatically within 24 hours. It moved from a positive $258 million to a negative $620 million, a swing of nearly $878 million. Ethereum followed a similar pattern, dropping from +$131 million to -$690 million in under 48 hours. Together, the combined open interest change for BTC and ETH on Binance reached roughly $1.7 billion.
Other exchanges also saw declines in open interest. Bybit and Deribit reported negative changes, indicating widespread deleveraging across the market.
Despite the derivatives downturn, spot ETFs attracted fresh capital. On June 15, BlackRock’s ETHA led spot ETH ETF inflows with $17.3358 million, contributing to total net inflows of $9.5876 million for ETH products. The next day, BlackRock’s IBIT topped spot BTC ETF inflows with $16.3526 million, helping push total net inflows for BTC ETFs to $10.0643 million. The sharp reset in open interest marked a significant shift in market sentiment. The combined Binance swing for BTC and ETH highlighted the scale of the contraction. Meanwhile, spot ETFs continued to see steady demand, with BlackRock’s funds leading the inflows.
