DICE Africa Launches in Senegal to Transform Waste into Economic Growth
The DICE Africa project was officially launched in Dakar, Senegal on March 31, 2026. It aims to boost circular economy practices across West Africa. The initiative seeks to turn the region’s waste challenges into economic opportunities. Senegal produces over 3 million tonnes of waste every year. This creates environmental pressures but also opens doors for sustainable business growth. The country has already taken steps to address waste, including banning plastic bags and setting up SONAGED, a national waste management agency.
The project is led by the Nigeria Climate Innovation Centre. Funding comes from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Stakeholders at the launch included government representatives, development partners, and civil society groups.
DICE Africa will focus on research, building capacity for small businesses, and mobilising climate finance. It will also develop projects ready for investment. A regional hackathon is planned to create digital tools for circular economy challenges, improving market access and funding options.
Digital technologies will play a key role in the initiative. They will help SMEs increase productivity, foster innovation, and promote inclusion. The long-term vision is to create a scalable ecosystem that supports innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic growth in Senegal. The project’s launch marks a step toward stronger circular economy practices in West Africa. By leveraging digital solutions and stakeholder collaboration, it aims to address waste while driving economic and environmental benefits. The initiative will run under the guidance of its leading partners and funders.
