CFIT Launches New Financial Inclusion Coalition With Project Nemo to Develop Safer Supported Payments

New UK Coalition Aims to Revolutionize Payments for Vulnerable Customers

The Centre for Finance, Innovation and Technology (CFIT) has launched its fifth national Coalition to improve payment solutions for vulnerable customers. The initiative aims to create a safer and more inclusive financial system. It builds on earlier work from Project Nemo, focusing on developing a Supported Payments framework. The Coalition will formally begin its work this summer. Its first priority is to design a trust and consent framework for supported payments. It will also develop a proof of concept to demonstrate how such payment journeys could function in practice.

Initial funding for the project comes from HM Treasury. The focus will be on assisting people with learning disabilities in managing their money. CFIT has scheduled a workshop on 18 June 2026 to collect input for its delivery roadmap.

Anna Wallace, CEO of CFIT, highlighted the need to address a systemic gap in the financial system. She emphasised the goal of building a more inclusive and trusted framework for all. Rachel Blake MP, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, commended CFIT’s efforts to help people manage their finances and engage fully in the economy.

Joanne Dewar, Co-Founder of Project Nemo, expressed optimism about the initiative. She believes it can unlock better everyday solutions and ensure financial services work for everyone. The Supported Payments model could transform financial support across the UK. It aims to help more people handle their money safely and independently. The Coalition’s work will start with a clear focus on trust, consent, and practical payment solutions.
