Dune London's Founder Shares Hard-Won Lessons in New Memoir
Daniel Rubin, founder of Dune London, has released a new book about his journey in the footwear industry. Titled Sole Survivor: How I Built a Global Shoe Brand, the book was published by Canbury Press last week. Rubin recently shared insights with Footwear News on the lessons he has learned over the years. Rubin’s career in footwear began early, influenced by his father, a women’s fashion footwear manufacturer. For 17 years, he worked as a shoe manufacturer and importer before launching Dune in 1992. A key turning point came in 1987, when he realised he could not match Taiwanese manufacturers on price or quality.
His first major setback with Dune involved a flawed order where the fabric in the shoes tore. This experience taught him the value of resilience and strong supplier relationships, skills that later proved vital during challenges like Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today, Dune’s international business makes up 35% of its retail sales, with the U.S. emerging as a key market for growth. Rubin advises aspiring entrepreneurs to find a niche, build a strong brand, and be prepared to work hard. He also stresses the importance of enjoying one’s work. The book outlines Rubin’s path from early struggles to global success. Dune continues to expand, with international sales rising and new markets in focus. His advice reflects decades of experience in an industry shaped by persistence and adaptation.
