Seattle City Light raises rates 5.6% as energy demand and costs surge
Seattle City Light has raised its rates by 5.6% for customers since January 2023. The increase comes as the utility faces growing electrical demand and a backlog of infrastructure projects. The utility warns of further hikes ahead. Back-to-back 9.5% annual increases are possible in 2027 and 2028. These rises are partly tied to the full costs of the salmon bypass project.
A recent $1.5 billion settlement with three Native tribes adds to the financial strain. The agreement allows the utility to keep using hydroelectric dams. It also includes a 0.5% yearly rate increase from 2027 to 2032.
Seattle City Light estimates it will need over 3,500 new megawatts of power by 2045. This is double its current usage. Washington State law requires new power to come from solar, wind, or other alternative sources. These options are more expensive than traditional methods.
Without the rate increases, the utility could fail to meet energy demand on over 200 days a year by 2045. An average household may pay an extra $10 per month, or $120 per year, over the next two years. The rate hikes aim to cover rising costs and ensure future energy supply. Customers will see higher bills as the utility works to meet demand and legal obligations. The changes reflect the challenges of expanding clean energy infrastructure.
