Astana's Saryarka District cracks down on fire safety violations in surprise raids

A fire safety inspection raid took place in Astana’s Saryarka District this week. The operation targeted dormitories, private homes, and local eateries to check compliance with fire safety regulations. Officials aimed to prevent hazards and educate the public on safety measures. The raid began at a barracks-style dormitory. Inspectors examined evacuation routes, fire alarms, extinguishers, and electrical wiring to ensure they met safety standards.

Next, the team visited a private residential area after receiving a complaint. Stockpiled plastic and other flammable materials near a fence raised concerns about fire risks. In such areas, houses are often built close together, increasing the likelihood of fires spreading rapidly.

Dozens of unscheduled inspections also took place at facilities with prior violations. These businesses had faced administrative penalties for breaching fire safety rules. The raid concluded at two food service establishments, where the focus remained on prevention and education.

Nurzat Buribayev, deputy head of the Saryarka District Emergency Situations Department, stated that such raids are conducted daily under the 'Aikyn Nanety' memorandum. Over a hundred similar operations have already occurred in the district this year. The joint effort involved officers from the Committee for Emergency Situations (DChS), police, and the district akimat. Organisations found with issues are given 60 days to address them. A follow-up inspection will then take place. If violations persist, the cases will be referred to court for further action.
