Maharashtra races to revive Mumbai's stalled pagdi building redevelopment

The Maharashtra government is taking steps to restart the redevelopment of old pagdi buildings in Mumbai. These structures are currently in poor condition, and the state aims to provide safe housing for residents. A recent High Court order has, however, stalled progress on the project. The redevelopment process came to a halt after the Bombay High Court issued a stay order. This delay has affected efforts to improve living conditions for tenants in these ageing buildings. To move forward, the government is reviewing legal provisions to potentially declare MHADA as the authority responsible for redevelopment. Senior officials have been instructed to monitor the Supreme Court case closely, and a Class-I officer will oversee the proceedings continuously.

The government has also assured tenants of its support. Efforts will be made to lift the High Court’s stay on tenant-friendly provisions. Regular review meetings are being held to ensure redevelopment commitments are met, and action will be taken against any officials found negligent. The state remains committed to resolving the legal hurdles and advancing the redevelopment of pagdi buildings. Tenants can expect continued government efforts to secure safer housing.
