UK Advocates Say Banks Restrict Legal Crypto Access

UK crypto campaign fights bank transfer blocks to exchanges

Stand With Crypto UK has launched a campaign against bank transfer restrictions to crypto exchanges. The group claims these restrictions unfairly block customers from accessing a legal asset class. It has called on its 286,000 UK supporters to file complaints with their banks. A recent report by the UK Cryptoassets Business Council, titled 'Locked Out', revealed that 40% of attempted transfers to crypto exchanges are delayed or blocked. The same study found that 80% of exchanges have seen increased customer friction over the past year due to these issues. One exchange reported nearly £1 billion in cancelled transactions because of bank rejections in just one year.

The campaign comes as the UK regulatory environment shifts. Earlier this year, retail investors regained tax-advantaged exposure to crypto exchange-traded notes. The Financial Conduct Authority has also proposed new rules allowing investment funds to allocate up to 10% to these products.

Meanwhile, the House of Lords Financial Services Regulations Committee warned that the UK risks falling behind in stablecoin regulation. The committee’s concerns add pressure on policymakers to address the growing challenges in the sector. The campaign highlights the tension between bank policies and customer access to crypto markets. With significant sums blocked and regulatory changes underway, the debate over financial freedom and oversight looks set to continue. The outcome could shape how UK investors engage with digital assets in the future.
