Fervo Energy lands $421M to build a groundbreaking geothermal power plant in Utah

Fervo Energy has secured over $421 million in financing for its Cape Station project in Utah. The development is set to become one of the world’s largest enhanced geothermal systems. Meanwhile, the company is collaborating with NVIDIA and a US national laboratory on a new AI-driven platform to improve geothermal energy production. Fervo Energy plans to invest about $1.2 billion in Cape Station between mid-2026 and early 2027. The project highlights the growing interest in geothermal energy, a reliable clean power source for industries like data centres that need constant electricity.

Together with NVIDIA and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Fervo is developing EGS-Twin. This AI-powered digital twin platform will combine real-time field data, physics-based models, and AI forecasting. Its purpose is to predict underground reservoir behaviour, optimise heat extraction, and improve drilling efficiency.

The platform aims to increase power output and reduce risks for geothermal projects. NVIDIA, which is pushing to match 100% of its global electricity use with renewables, sees geothermal as a key part of its climate strategy. Data centres already consume about 5% of US electricity, a figure expected to grow as AI demand rises. By 2030, major AI firms’ electricity use could more than double, reaching up to 295 TWh. The Cape Station project will advance with significant funding and new technology. The EGS-Twin platform is designed to make geothermal energy more efficient and predictable. These developments could help meet the rising electricity demands of AI and data centre operations with cleaner energy sources.
