Global Taskforce Calls for Unified Ownership Data to Fight Financial Crime
A new report highlights the urgent need for better cross-border access to ownership data. Current systems are largely domestic, which makes tracing ownership chains across jurisdictions difficult. The Taskforce has now recommended key steps to improve global financial crime detection. More than 100 jurisdictions already maintain beneficial ownership registers. However, these systems operate in isolation, limiting their effectiveness against cross-border crime. Fragmented data prevents financial institutions, regulators, and law enforcement from identifying links between entities and individuals across different countries.
The Taskforce proposes three main improvements. These include better access to ownership information, common data standards, and machine-readable data sharing. Practical solutions could involve international search platforms, coordinated data exchange between authorities, and standardised datasets that can be linked globally. Interoperability in ownership data is seen as the next critical step. It would strengthen financial integrity, improve accountability in the public sector, and support anti-corruption efforts worldwide. Without connected systems, cross-border financial crime will remain harder to detect and prevent.
