Maharashtra revives Mumbai's 190-year-old Asiatic Library with ₹5.63 crore restoration

The Maharashtra state government is restoring the iconic Asiatic Library in south Mumbai. Built in 1835, the Grade-I heritage structure spans around 3,765 square metres and remains a key cultural landmark. Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale recently reviewed progress on the conservation efforts. On June 30, 2023, Minister Bhosale inspected the ongoing restoration work at the Asiatic Library. He stressed the need to preserve historic landmarks for future generations and instructed officials to follow heritage conservation guidelines. The project has a sanctioned budget of Rs 5.63 crore, with completion targeted for July 2026.

The restoration covers extensive repairs to plaster, ceilings, and civil structures. Original doors, windows, and cupboards will also be conserved as part of the work. Additional upgrades include renovating toilets, installing protective mesh, and strengthening vulnerable sections of the building.

Special attention is being given to the library’s valuable book collection stored in the basement. Waterproofing and moisture control measures are being implemented to safeguard these historic texts. The Asiatic Library currently houses the Directorate of Libraries, the State Central Library, and other administrative offices. The restoration aims to revive the 190-year-old structure while maintaining its heritage value. All works are expected to finish by mid-2026, ensuring the building’s longevity. The project will also enhance safety and accessibility for visitors and staff.
