PayPal shuts down its venture arm under new CEO's cost-cutting drive
PayPal has shut down its venture capital arm, PayPal Ventures, as part of a major restructuring under new CEO Enrique Lores. The move follows a decision to retreat from non-core activities and focus on the company’s primary services. This shift also raises doubts about PayPal’s $100 million pledge to support digital commerce in Africa. Enrique Lores took over as CEO in March 2026, replacing Alex Chriss. The board believed Chriss was not acting fast enough. Lores now plans to cut about 20% of PayPal’s global workforce, equating to over 4,500 jobs, within the next two to three years. The goal is to save at least $1.5 billion.
PayPal Ventures, once a key investment unit, has seen its team shrink from over 10 partners to just two. The unit no longer lists any employees on PayPal’s website. All new investment activity has stopped, and operations are being wound down. Jefferies, an investment bank, has been hired to sell off the remaining portfolio positions on the secondary market.
The closure of PayPal Ventures casts uncertainty over the company’s $100 million commitment to boost digital commerce in Africa. This commitment included investments, acquisitions, and partnerships across the continent. The decision also echoes PayPal’s long-standing caution in Africa, having restricted inbound payments to Nigeria since 2004 due to fraud and chargeback concerns. The shutdown of PayPal Ventures marks a clear shift in strategy under Lores. The company is prioritising cost-cutting and its core payment services over venture investments. The future of its African initiatives and the sale of its remaining assets will be closely watched.
