Kazakhstan Seeks Closer Ties With Indonesia to Expand Asia-Pacific Reach

Kazakhstan and Indonesia revive economic ties after 13-year pause

Kazakhstan and Indonesia have renewed efforts to deepen their cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. Officials from both countries met in Astana in May to discuss expanding ties across several key sectors. The meeting marked the first session of their Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation in 13 years. The talks in Astana focused on strengthening economic, investment, and transit-logistics links. Both sides explored complementary approaches in strategic areas, moving beyond a simple trade balance. Kazakhstan also emphasised its potential as a hub for investment and logistics to Indonesian representatives.

Tourism and creative industries were highlighted as ways to boost people-to-people connections. The number of Kazakh tourists visiting Indonesia rose sharply, from 8,200 in 2023 to 24,400 in 2025. Discussions also covered trade, transport, agriculture, digital technologies, and education.

Kazakhstan regards Indonesia as a major player in regional and global affairs. The meeting underscored a shared commitment to broadening cooperation across multiple fields. The renewed dialogue signals a push for closer bilateral relations. Both countries aim to expand collaboration in trade, technology, and tourism. The meeting in Astana sets the stage for future joint initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region.
