Virginia Unveils £28.5 Billion Plan to Transform State's Transportation by 2033
Virginia has announced a major £28.5 billion investment in transportation over the next six years. The plan covers roads, bridges, rail and public transport across the state. It will fund over 4,300 projects and take effect from July 1, 2027. The scheme allocates £930 million to public transport programmes. Another £500 million will go towards 43 bridge projects under the State of Good Repair Bridge Program. This includes replacements and auxiliary lanes for Interstate 81 in western Virginia.
In addition, £78 million is set aside for pavement upgrades on state and locally maintained roads. Funding will also support capacity improvements on Interstate 64 in Hampton Roads. The Route 58 corridor in Southwest Virginia will see continued investment as part of the plan.
About £1 billion is earmarked for local and regional projects in Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, and Central Virginia. The Virginia Department of Transportation expects to spend around £9 billion in the 2027 fiscal year alone. The plan begins on July 1, 2027. It will finance thousands of projects to upgrade infrastructure across the state. Virginia aims to improve transport networks for residents and businesses over the next six years.
