LA Archdiocese uncovers fraud in $1.54B abuse settlement wave

The Los Angeles Archdiocese has faced a surge in abuse claims over the past 18 months. By 2024, it had already paid out $880 million in settlements, with total payouts reaching at least $1.54 billion over two decades. The rise in claims followed changes to California’s statute of limitations for sex abuse cases. The archdiocese uncovered a fraudulent scheme after reviewing a claim filed by a prisoner. Investigations revealed a network of at least 30 people involved in submitting false claims, including convicted criminals and their relatives. The surge in lawsuits was partly driven by increased advertising and private equity funding for attorneys pursuing such cases.

In response, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops updated its 'Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People' in June 2025. The revised charter commits to treating abuse complaints as sincere by default. Meanwhile, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich of Chicago announced a court decision on the archdiocese’s lawsuit on June 12, 2025.

The archdiocese is now pursuing legal action against seven defendants linked to the scheme. Marie Reilly, a business law professor, has explained how private equity firms fund mass tort claims, including those related to clergy abuse. The case is set to go to trial on November 30, 2025. The archdiocese has taken legal steps to address fraudulent claims while continuing to process legitimate ones. The trial later this year will determine the outcome of its case against those involved in the scheme. The revised charter reflects ongoing efforts to handle abuse allegations transparently.
