Salzgitter launches €15.4M renovation to revive historic Ostsiedlung district

The city of Salzgitter has begun a major renovation project in the Ostsiedlung district. A ceremony on 17 June 2023 marked the start of work on 38 residential buildings containing 146 apartments. The initiative aims to restore the area’s former appeal through extensive upgrades. Salzgitter acquired the buildings as part of its urban revitalisation programme. The city is taking an active role as a property owner to drive improvements in the neighbourhood.

Renovation plans include exterior upgrades, interior modernisation, and accessibility enhancements. Two properties, Rheinstraße 3 and 12, will be converted to fully wheelchair-friendly standards, serving as models for the rest. The total cost of the project is €15.4 million, with €12.2 million coming from state and federal funding.

Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel stressed the importance of returning the Ostsiedlung district to its original attractiveness. The work is expected to be completed by mid-2028, significantly improving the buildings, apartments, and surrounding living environment. The project is part of a broader effort, with over €50 million in structural aid secured for Salzgitter. The renovations will enhance living conditions and accessibility in the area. Completion is scheduled for mid-2028.
