Yakutia's Bold Plan to Boost Birth Rates With Cash Incentives and Grants

Yakutia, also known as the Republic of Sakha, is taking bold steps to support families and boost birth rates. With over one million residents, the region stands out in Russia’s Far East for its strong natural population growth, even as national birth rates decline. In 2023, Yakutia introduced a one-time payment of 200,000 rubles for families with three or more children to help improve their housing. So far, 1,684 families have received this support, while 707 applications remain under review. The region also distributed regional 'Family' grants to 1,926 families last year, totalling 223.3 million rubles.

Starting January 1, 2024, the regional 'Family' maternal capital grant will double to 300,000 rubles. Newlyweds under 25 will also receive a one-time cash payment of 50,000 rubles. Previously, the maternal capital grant for families with three or more children stood at 151,690 rubles.

Yakutia’s 'Children of the Century' endowment fund has already approved 18,236 applications, with 7,362 beneficiaries receiving 598 million rubles. Over five years, funding for motherhood and child support programmes has surged 7.7-fold, reaching 26.5 billion rubles. These measures aim to strengthen family support in Yakutia. The expanded grants and new payments reflect the region’s commitment to encouraging population growth and improving living standards for families with children.
