Yakutia strengthens ties with China through trade and cultural partnerships
Russia’s Far East region of Yakutia is set to deepen its economic and cultural ties with China. President Vladimir Putin has announced major infrastructure plans to support this growing partnership. The focus includes new transport links and expanded collaboration in technology and the arts. In the first seven months of 2023, Yakutia’s trade with China reached around $2 billion. The previous year, the figure exceeded 3 billion rubles. These strong economic links have prompted further integration between the two regions.
President Putin revealed plans to construct transport routes across the Lena and Amur rivers. A bridge over the Lena and another crossing over the Amur are part of the Jalinda-Mohe project. These developments aim to boost connectivity and trade.
Yakutia is also expanding its partnership with China into new sectors. IT, high-tech manufacturing, and artificial intelligence are key areas of future cooperation. The creative industry will see closer ties as well, with joint film projects in the pipeline.
The regional government has already signed an agreement with Shang Bao International Film Culture Media Co. Ltd, a Beijing-based company. Yakutia, which ranks third in Russia for film production, plans to build one of the country’s largest film studios. Partnerships with Chinese film firms and production centres are expected to grow. The new transport routes and cultural agreements mark a significant step in integrating Yakutia into Russia’s economic relationship with China. Trade volumes continue to rise, and the region is positioning itself as a hub for both commerce and creative industries. The projects are designed to strengthen long-term cooperation between the two nations.
