Karaganda exposes mass overcharging for abortions under OSMS insurance

Authorities in Karaganda have uncovered widespread overcharging for medical services. Women were charged for abortion procedures that should have been fully covered by the OSMS health insurance system. An investigation revealed 775 cases of overcharging across the region over three years. The total sum involved reached 22 million tenge. In one district alone, Malikhan Bekeykhan, 218 women received refunds amounting to 7 million tenge after the prosecutor’s office intervened.

The probe also identified over 700 instances where patients were billed twice for the same medical services. Many of these involved women charged for abortions despite OSMS coverage. Refunds for the overcharged services are still being processed. The findings highlight systemic issues in billing practices within Karaganda’s healthcare system. Authorities continue to address the cases to ensure proper reimbursements.
