Microsoft boosts clean energy with 260 MW of new solar power in the US

Microsoft has expanded its clean energy efforts with 260 MW of new solar power in the US. The projects, developed by MN8 Energy, are already operational and supply electricity through long-term agreements. This move strengthens the company’s position as a leader in corporate renewable energy adoption. The latest solar additions include 120 MW from Long Point Solar in Texas and 140 MW from American Beach Solar in North Carolina. Both sites now feed power into major US electricity markets. These projects add to Microsoft’s existing renewable portfolio, which spans 40 GW across 26 countries.

In fiscal year 2025, the company also contracted 45 million metric tons of carbon removal. This marks an 800% increase from the previous year. Microsoft’s strategy combines emissions reduction with removal technologies to meet its climate goals.

The tech giant has set ambitious targets: becoming carbon negative by 2030 and removing all historical emissions by 2050. It is also one of the largest buyers of carbon removal credits, investing in direct air capture, bioenergy with carbon capture, reforestation, soil carbon projects, and enhanced rock weathering. A recent agreement with Alt Carbon involves removing 36,920 metric tons of CO2 in India using enhanced rock weathering. Microsoft’s renewable energy and carbon removal efforts are among the most extensive globally. The new solar projects and expanded carbon removal contracts reinforce its commitment to cutting emissions. These steps support the company’s long-term goal of addressing climate change through both reduction and removal.
