XRP Ledger Unveils Native Lending and Smart Escrows to Boost DeFi Growth

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is set to introduce major upgrades aimed at expanding its role in decentralised finance. New features will include native lending pools and fixed-term crypto loans, designed to operate directly on the blockchain. These changes position XRPL as a potential hub for credit services while maintaining its focus on speed and efficiency.

The foundation behind the ledger has also restructured its operations to prioritise independent validators and open-source development across the ecosystem. The first upgrade will bring native lending protocols to XRPL, allowing liquidity pools and fixed-term loans to function without intermediaries. The system is being built to serve both retail traders and institutional users. At the same time, XRP will act as a cross-chain liquidity bridge, supporting seamless transactions between different networks.

A second key improvement, called Advanced Programmability or Smart Escrows, will introduce automated conditions for transactions and locked funds. Unlike traditional smart contracts, this feature will keep XRPL’s processing speeds intact. The foundation has stressed that these upgrades will not turn the ledger into a general-purpose smart contract platform.

Existing infrastructure already supports many of these changes. XRPL’s current tools include the Multi-Purpose Tokens standard, native automated market maker (AMM) functionality, and compliance frameworks tied to Credentials and Permissioned Domains. The foundation also confirmed that permissioned tools and compliance layers are now active across the ecosystem, ensuring regulatory alignment for institutional participants. The upgrades will enable XRPL to function as a decentralised credit hub while preserving its core advantages in speed and efficiency. Institutions and individual users will gain access to on-chain lending without relying on third parties. The foundation’s shift toward independent validators and open-source growth further reinforces the ledger’s long-term scalability.
