VTB Group bets big on AI to transform banking operations
VTB Group is pushing ahead with a major expansion of artificial intelligence across its banking operations. The company plans to invest tens of billions of rubles in AI development over the coming years. Its focus lies on technologies that improve efficiency, reduce risks, and deliver clear financial returns. The bank is rolling out AI-driven solutions in key areas, including lending, biometric security, and robotic process automation. Voice assistants, predictive analytics, and branch performance tools are already in use. These systems help personalise services, speed up decisions, and cut operational costs.
VTB follows a ‘lean AI’ approach, ensuring each project pays for itself within a few years. Of 130 initial proposals for digital assistants, only 17 were selected for further development. The highest returns so far come from AI applications in lending and day-to-day operations.
The group sees centralised AI development as vital—not just for its own growth, but for the broader national economy. By automating processes and improving risk management, the bank aims to strengthen its position in the market. The investment will fund further AI integration, from customer-facing tools to back-office automation. VTB expects these technologies to boost lending volumes, enhance security, and streamline operations. The bank’s strategy centres on measurable results and long-term cost efficiency.
