Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles posts record revenue but profit plummets in 2025

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWN) saw strong revenue growth in 2025, with deliveries and sales both rising sharply. Yet despite higher demand and record figures for some models, the company's operating profit fell significantly due to regulatory pressures and market challenges.

The mixed results reflect a year of contrasts: soaring electric vehicle sales in Europe but stagnation in North America, alongside strict cost controls that boosted cash flow to over €1 billion.

VWN delivered 428,000 vehicles in 2025, a 6% increase from the previous year. Revenue climbed 11% to €16.9 billion, driven by higher order intake—up nearly a third—though some deliveries were pushed into 2026. The ID. Buzz remained Europe's top electric commercial vehicle, with sales surpassing 60,000 units, more than double 2024's total. The Multivan also set a new record, with deliveries rising 31% to 38,700 units.

Demand for electric commercial vehicles surged in Europe, thanks to stricter CO₂ rules, zero-emission mandates, and lower transport costs. The European e-truck market grew to $3.8 billion. In contrast, North America saw stagnation or decline after federal purchase incentives expired in September 2025. Higher prices and a shift to hybrids followed, as US customer interest remained weak. Despite revenue gains, VWN's operating profit dropped to €245 million—down from €743 million in 2024—with the operating return on sales falling to 1.5%. The decline stemmed from provisions for potential EU CO₂ penalties and struggles in North America, including tariff issues and the loss of EV incentives. Tight cost controls, however, helped net cash flow jump 208% to around €1 billion. Looking ahead, VWN plans a major update in 2026. New variants of the ID. Buzz, Caddy, Multivan, Transporter, Caravelle, and Crafter will roll out as part of a broader technology refresh. The company also maintained its leading position in Germany and 11 other European markets.

VWN's 2025 performance highlights strong demand for its electric and commercial vehicles in Europe, offset by financial pressures from regulations and weak North American sales. With a €1 billion cash flow boost and planned product updates for 2026, the company aims to strengthen its market position while navigating ongoing challenges.
