Voestalpine lands €500M rail deals with Deutsche Bahn and Swiss Federal Railways

Voestalpine has secured two major rail contracts worth nearly €500 million with Deutsche Bahn and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The deals mark a significant expansion for the company's Railway Systems division, moving beyond its traditional steel operations.

The agreements include long-term supplies of rails, signaling technology, and monitoring systems for key infrastructure upgrades across Germany and Switzerland.

Under the 20-year framework agreement with SBB, Voestalpine will modernise parts of the Swiss rail network. This includes delivering axle-counting systems for real-time track monitoring, improving safety and efficiency. The contract strengthens the company's position as a full-service provider in railway infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Deutsche Bahn has awarded Voestalpine a separate contract to supply premium rails, switch components, and signaling technology. This supports Germany's planned €23 billion rail infrastructure investment in 2026, part of a broader push to upgrade the country's transport network.

Beyond these deals, Voestalpine's logistics arm, CargoServ, continues to expand its raw materials operations. The division transports around 1.8 million tons of iron ore annually from the Erzberg mine to Linz using specialised container systems. CEO Herbert Eibensteiner highlighted the contracts as proof of growth potential in the Railway Systems segment, reducing reliance on volatile steel markets.

The new agreements could also help stabilise Voestalpine's share price, which currently sits 19% below its 52-week high. Predictable long-term capacity planning and reduced exposure to steel market fluctuations are expected to provide medium-term stability.

The contracts with Deutsche Bahn and SBB represent a major step in Voestalpine's shift toward railway infrastructure services. With deliveries spanning rails, signaling, and monitoring technology, the company is positioning itself as a key player in Europe's rail modernisation efforts. The deals also offer financial predictability amid changing market conditions.
