Visa and UnionPay team up to revolutionize cross-border payments in China

Visa has inked a deal with UnionPay International to streamline cross-border payments into the Chinese mainland. The collaboration will leverage Visa Direct to transmit funds to millions of UnionPay debit cardholders. Both entities aim to expedite and democratize transactions for businesses and individuals alike.

The alliance connects Visa Direct with UnionPay International's MoneyExpress platform. This nexus will facilitate secure, transparent money transfers for remittances, freelancer payments, contractor disbursements, and family support. Over 95% of UnionPay debit cardholders in mainland China will be able to receive these funds.

The service is slated to debut in the first half of 2026. Once fully deployed, around 1.3 billion UnionPay cardholders in China will gain access to global Visa acceptance. This means UnionPay cards can be used more extensively for international transactions, broadening payment options for consumers and businesses.

The partnership between Visa and UnionPay International will enable smoother cross-border transactions for a vast number of users. Businesses dispatching payouts and families transferring money will reap the benefits of a more efficient system. The full rollout is anticipated to fortify financial ties between China and the rest of the world.
