Villa Beer's Modernist Legacy Revived After Decades of Neglect
Villa Beer, a striking modernist home in Vienna, has found a new guardian. After decades of changing hands, the property was bought in 2021 by Lothar Trierenberg, who plans to restore its original vision. The villa’s history stretches back to the 1930s, when it was first built for a wealthy industrialist before falling into financial hardship. The story of Villa Beer began in 1929, when Julius Beer, co-owner of the Berson rubber company, bought land in Vienna’s Hietzing district. Instead of an art nouveau mansion, he wanted a bold modernist home. He commissioned architects Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach to bring his vision to life.
Frank, a rising figure in modern architecture, had just represented Austria at the first International Congress of Modern Architecture in 1928. His design for Villa Beer featured sculptural staircases, open-plan living spaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows to flood the interior with light. Construction finished in 1930, and the Beer family moved in. But financial troubles forced them to give up the house just two years later. The villa’s fate took another turn in 1938 when the bank seized it. Over the following decades, it passed through different owners. Meanwhile, Josef Frank emigrated to Sweden in 1935, leaving behind a building that would become one of his most significant works. In 2021, Lothar Trierenberg purchased Villa Beer. Inspired by Frank’s legacy, he set up a foundation to preserve the property. Plans now include public guided tours, creative workshops, and an artist residency programme to keep the villa’s modernist spirit alive.
Villa Beer will soon welcome visitors for the first time in its history. The foundation’s work ensures the building remains a working example of Josef Frank’s design principles. With tours, workshops, and residencies, the villa’s next chapter will connect its past with a wider audience.
