Vertical Aerospace races toward 2028 eVTOL launch with FAA and CAA approvals

British eVTOL manufacturer Vertical Aerospace is pushing ahead with plans to certify its electric aircraft. The company has formally applied to both the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for approval. With key milestones already achieved, it now aims to launch commercial flights in the UK by late 2028.

Vertical Aerospace has made steady progress in regulatory approvals. In 2023, the FAA issued its G-1 certification basis, outlining the safety and performance standards for the Valo eVTOL. The following year, the CAA granted Stage 4 design approval, confirming the aircraft's technical readiness. No other aviation regulators have been publicly involved as of early 2026.

The company has also secured major commercial deals. American Airlines has agreed to purchase up to 350 aircraft in a deal potentially worth $1 billion. Meanwhile, Bristow Group has ordered 100 eVTOLs and will provide operational support. These partnerships follow over 1,500 preorders for the Valo, with a total estimated value of $6 billion.

Looking ahead, Vertical Aerospace has set ambitious financial targets. By 2030, it plans to produce more than 225 aircraft annually, achieving a 20% gross margin. The firm also projects over $100 million in operating cash flow within the same timeframe.

Vertical Aerospace continues to advance its certification and production plans. The company's partnerships with American Airlines and Bristow Group strengthen its market position. If successful, its Valo eVTOL could enter commercial service in the UK before the end of 2028.
