Uttar Pradesh's 'Solar Didis' Lead the Charge in Clean Energy and Women's Empowerment

A new initiative in Uttar Pradesh is boosting solar energy adoption while empowering women. The Yogi government, in partnership with the Central government, has launched a programme to train and employ 'Solar Didis'—women who will promote clean energy across the state. The scheme aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of a solar-powered India and greater women’s participation in the workforce. The programme focuses on strengthening the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana, creating green jobs, and expanding clean energy use. Under the initiative, women were trained through the MNRE City Accelerator Programme and connected with employment opportunities. These newly appointed Solar Didis will now assist consumers with solar panel applications, subsidy details, and general guidance on solar energy.

To support their work, each Solar Didi will receive a monthly honorarium of Rs 14,156 from Hanumant Renewable Company. Additionally, they will be provided a free 2 kW rooftop solar system and an induction stove. The Government of India has also introduced special incentives under the City Accelerator Programme to encourage their role in the sector. Energy Minister A.K. Sharma formally distributed appointment letters and training certificates to the Solar Didis during a special event. The programme aims to make solar energy more accessible while giving women a key role in the state’s green transition.

The initiative will see trained Solar Didis actively supporting households in adopting solar solutions. With financial incentives, free equipment, and formal recognition, the programme seeks to accelerate clean energy use in Uttar Pradesh. The state government’s push reflects broader efforts to align with national sustainability and women’s empowerment goals.
