US stock market climbs in Q4 despite lingering economic uncertainty and Fed rate cuts

US equities made gains in the fourth quarter despite renewed finance turbulence. Strong corporate earnings and interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve helped drive the rise. Yet concerns over inflation and a government shutdown weighed on investor confidence.

The quarter began with a solid economic backdrop. The initial third-quarter GDP estimate showed growth of 4.3%, pointing to a resilient economy. Consumer spending stayed strong, though signs of pressure emerged among lower-income households.

The Federal Reserve cut the federal funds rate twice in the final three months of the year. These reductions followed a similar 25-basis-point cut in September, bringing the total for 2023 to three. The moves came as inflation eased but remained above the Fed's 2% target. Labour market conditions also softened, with unemployment climbing to 4.6%—its highest level in four years. Banking sector concerns, lingering since the March 2023 failures, added to the cautious approach.

Equity markets responded positively. The S&P 500 Index returned 2.66%, while the Russell 2000 Index gained 2.19%. Investment strategies favoured well-managed companies with strong competitive positions, reflecting a focus on stability amid uncertainty.

The quarter closed with equities higher, supported by rate cuts and corporate performance. However, inflation stayed above target, and labour market weakness persisted. Investors now watch for further signs of economic cooling in the months ahead.
