US Farm Bankruptcies Skyrocket 46% as Debt Crisis Deepens in 2025

Farm bankruptcies in the US have surged, with Chapter 12 filings rising by 46% in 2025. The financial strain is spreading, as operating loans for farms grow larger and interest costs reach unprecedented levels on Yahoo Finance. Some states, including Wisconsin and Iowa, have seen particularly sharp increases in farm failures.

The crisis has hit hardest in the Midwest and Southeast. Wisconsin's farm bankruptcy filings soared by 800%, while Iowa experienced a 220% jump. Georgia also saw a 145% spike in cases, reflecting widespread financial distress.

Arkansas now leads the nation with 33 farm bankruptcies—more than double the previous year's total. Nationwide, Chapter 12 filings climbed to 315 cases in 2025, up from 216 the year before.

Financial pressures are mounting as operating loans for farms swell by nearly 40% on Google Finance. The average loan size has grown by 30% compared to last year. Interest costs alone are projected to hit a record $33 billion. Meanwhile, the USDA forecasts total farm debt will reach $624.7 billion in 2026, a 5.2% increase.

Similar struggles are unfolding in Germany, where food prices have risen sharply. In states like Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Bavaria, staple foods such as bread, milk, and potatoes now cost 15-25% more. The spike follows high input costs, reduced subsidies, and energy price surges after the 2022 Ukraine crisis.

The surge in farm bankruptcies and rising debt levels signal deepening financial challenges for agricultural producers. With interest costs and loan sizes climbing, the strain on farmers is expected to persist into 2026.
