UnitedHealth's meteoric rise faces Medicare Advantage rate uncertainty in 2027
UnitedHealth Group has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, with its stock price surging over 400% since 2020. The company's revenue for 2025 reached $447.6 billion, marking a 12% rise from the previous year. However, new challenges are emerging as investors grow cautious over potential changes to Medicare Advantage rates.
Between late 2020 and early 2026, UnitedHealth's share price climbed from around $290 to over $1,450. This performance far outpaced competitors like CVS Health, which rose by roughly 80%, and Humana, which saw a 20% increase in the same period. Much of this success came from the Medicare & retirement division, which grew 89% since 2020, hitting $171.3 billion in 2025—over 38% of the company's total revenue.
The segment's rapid expansion, up 23% in 2025 alone, has been a key driver. But recent proposals to freeze Medicare Advantage rates in 2027 have raised concerns. Investors worry these changes could hurt UnitedHealth's profitability, leading to a more conservative outlook.
The company now expects a 2% revenue decline in 2026, dropping to about $439 billion. Its stock currently trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 14, with a 3.2% dividend yield. If UnitedHealth shifts focus toward dividends, analysts suggest its valuation could face further pressure, trading at an even lower earnings multiple.
Given the uncertainty, many investors are adopting a wait-and-see approach before making further moves.
UnitedHealth's strong growth in recent years contrasts with its current challenges. The proposed freeze on Medicare Advantage rates and a projected revenue dip in 2026 have made the market cautious. With its stock trading at a lower multiple and dividend yield rising, the company's next steps will be closely watched.
