UMKC Student's Housing Startup Wins Top Entrepreneur Award After Life-Saving Inspiration
Katie Marshall, a graduate student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), has been honoured for her entrepreneurial work in healthcare housing. Her company, A Traveled Path Homes, provides stable accommodation for traveling medical professionals. The recognition came during UMKC’s annual Entrepreneur of the Year awards at H&R Block’s Copaken Stage.
Marshall’s journey began after a traveling medical worker saved her life. Inspired by the experience, she founded A Traveled Path Homes to address housing instability for professionals in the field. She launched the venture using free resources and early partnerships, quickly gaining traction.
Recently, she pitched her business to leaders from seven major healthcare systems in Nashville. The region’s largest system expressed interest, marking a significant step forward. The company has since secured a multiyear lodging contract with a state agency. Marshall is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Entrepreneurial Real Estate at UMKC. Her work within the Vecino Group’s mentorship programme bridges academic theory with real-world development. UMKC leaders highlighted the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and community impact during the awards ceremony. Marshall shared the stage with prominent figures, including geneticist J. Craig Venter and financial advisor Peter Mallouk.
The award underscores Marshall’s progress in creating sustainable housing solutions for medical workers. With a state contract in place and growing interest from healthcare systems, her company is positioned for further expansion. The recognition also reflects UMKC’s support for student-led ventures that address real-world challenges.
