UK retailers race to upgrade payments as customer demands shift

UK retailers are facing growing pressure to modernise payment systems and adapt to shifting customer demands. A new survey reveals that business owners now expect more from payment providers, with speed and flexibility becoming key priorities in daily operations.

The study shows that 84% of retail decision-makers have raised their expectations of payment providers over the past two years. This comes as customers increasingly demand seamless experiences, weighing convenience, service, and checkout efficiency together. Nearly half (46%) believe shoppers now expect mobile or flexible payment options beyond traditional tills.

Retailers are responding by expanding payment methods, blending fixed, mobile, and in-aisle solutions. Speed is seen as critical at every stage—from service and fulfilment to checkout and issue resolution. In fact, 77% consider fast checkout essential for daily trading, while 80% say accepting all major cards and digital wallets is vital. Beyond payments, 91% rank adapting to changing customer behaviour as a top business priority. Many also see faster access to funds as a future competitive edge, with 44% believing it will soon be a necessity. Additionally, 77% view integrated reporting and reconciliation as important for smooth operations.

The findings highlight a clear shift in retail priorities, with payment flexibility and operational speed now central to success. As customer expectations rise, businesses are investing in technology to stay competitive and meet evolving demands.
