Stable Tourism Year 2025 in Thuringia - Thuringia's tourism holds steady in 2025 but lags behind pre-pandemic peaks

Thuringia's tourism sector showed signs of stabilisation in 2025 after years of fluctuation. While the region recorded over 10 million overnight stays for the second time since 2019, visitor numbers and stays dipped slightly compared to previous years. Officials remain cautiously optimistic as the industry prepares for new strategies and upcoming events.

The state saw 3.9 million visitors in 2025, a modest rise of 0.4 percent from 2024. Despite this increase, the total number of guests remained 65,000 lower than in 2019. Overnight stays also fell short of pre-pandemic levels, with nearly 300,000 fewer than six years earlier.

In total, Thuringia logged around 10.1 million overnight stays in 2025, a slight drop of 0.2 percent from 2024. Domestic travellers made up the bulk, contributing roughly 9.5 million of these stays. The average visit lasted 2.6 days, unchanged from the previous year.

Only two areas bucked the trend: Erfurt, the state capital, and the Weimar region both reported growth in both guest numbers and overnight stays. Tourism leaders are now focusing on the upcoming ITB travel trade show in Berlin and a new tourism strategy set for adoption in mid-2025.

Thuringia's tourism figures for 2025 reflect a mixed picture of recovery and lingering challenges. With overnight stays nearing 10 million again but still below past peaks, the region is pinning hopes on fresh initiatives and key industry events. The coming months will reveal whether these efforts can reverse the gradual decline in international and domestic visitor numbers.
