Germany Supports Start-ups at Thuringian Universities - Thuringia invests €4.8M to turn student ideas into thriving startups by 2029
Thuringia is boosting its support for university startups with an extra €4.8 million investment by 2029. The funding will strengthen the Thuringian University Startup Network, which helps students and researchers turn ideas into businesses. Eight universities across the region are working together to build a lasting system for new entrepreneurs.
The network is led by Friedrich Schiller University Jena, which already advises on over 60 startup projects each year. Its role includes coordinating support for founders from all partner institutions.
The eight universities involved are the University of Jena, Technische Universität Ilmenau, Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences, Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, the University of Erfurt, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, and Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena. Together, they provide resources and guidance to aspiring business owners.
A key focus of the network is preparing entrepreneurs for future challenges. Training and mentorship will centre on sustainability, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence. The goal is to ensure startups are equipped with the skills needed in today's market.
The additional €4.8 million will expand the network's reach and services over the next five years. With structured support and a focus on emerging industries, the initiative aims to increase the number of successful startups coming out of Thuringia's universities. The long-term plan is to create a self-sustaining system for innovation and entrepreneurship in the region.
