Texas accountant indicted for embezzling $3M from Colorado firms

Emily Merrill, a corporate accountant from Texas, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver. The charges relate to the alleged theft of over $3 million from two Colorado-based companies. Prosecutors claim she used the funds for personal expenses, including luxury items and travel.

Merrill was arrested on May 14 and later released on a $100,000 unsecured bond. She now faces multiple counts of wire fraud and money laundering, with potential forfeiture of assets if convicted.

Between July 2021 and November 2024, Merrill worked for 'O.T.', a Lafayette-based company. During this time, she allegedly transferred more than $2.7 million into her personal accounts. The indictment states she made unauthorised ACH transfers, took out a high-interest loan in the company’s name, and spent nearly $500,000 on company credit cards.

The purchases included airfare, hotels, retail goods, a luxury Swiss watch, and vehicles. Prosecutors also accuse her of laundering money through the purchase of three vehicles in Texas in 2023, using funds from the Colorado company. Merrill later joined a second firm, 'A.T.', from April 2025 to December 2025. There, she allegedly obtained over $300,000 through similar methods. The grand jury has charged her with 10 counts of wire fraud and three counts of money laundering. If convicted, she could lose several bank accounts, vehicles, and a home in Cypress, Texas. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the ongoing investigation.

The case against Merrill involves substantial financial misconduct across two companies. Federal prosecutors will seek to prove the misuse of funds and the laundering of money through high-value purchases. A conviction could result in significant asset forfeiture and legal penalties.
