Texas A&M-Victoria names Christian Hardigree its first permanent president under new system
Texas A&M University-Victoria has appointed Christian Hardigree as its first permanent president under the Texas A&M System. The university, which joined the system in September 2024, had previously operated under the University of Houston System. Hardigree brings a background in law and higher education leadership to the role.
The transfer of Texas A&M University-Victoria from the University of Houston System was approved by lawmakers in May. Supporters argued that the Texas A&M System could provide stronger programmes, particularly in engineering and agriculture. The official handover took place in September, with James K. Nelson Jr. serving as interim president until Hardigree's selection.
Hardigree was named the sole finalist for the presidency on September 18. After a mandatory 21-day waiting period, the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents confirmed her appointment on October 10. Administrators highlighted her experience in launching new academic initiatives as a key factor in their decision.
Before joining Texas A&M-Victoria, Hardigree worked as regional chancellor for the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. She also held founding roles at universities in Colorado and Georgia. Her academic credentials include a law degree from Mercer University and a bachelor's from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The campus, with around 3,500 students, is now the 12th in the Texas A&M System. Hardigree has spoken about her enthusiasm for collaborating with students, faculty, and local partners to raise the university's profile. Some critics, however, have questioned her past work on diversity and equity, though Chancellor Glenn Hegar has publicly supported her leadership.
Hardigree's appointment marks a new chapter for Texas A&M-Victoria as it settles into the Texas A&M System. The university's academic direction remains unchanged from its previous alignment with the University of Houston System, according to available records as of February 2026. Her leadership will focus on expanding the institution's reach and strengthening its community ties.
