Tesla's German Plant Erupts in Legal Battle Over Secret Recording and Union Clash
Tesla's Grünheide plant in Germany is facing fresh turmoil after a covert laptop recording sparked legal disputes and deepened tensions with the union IG Metall. The factory, once praised by Elon Musk as 'one of the coolest in the world', is now at the centre of a bitter 'culture war' over unionisation ahead of a crucial works council election.
The conflict intensified after a secret recording from a company laptop was leaked, prompting IG Metall to take legal action. The union, which currently holds the largest faction on Tesla's works council, now faces a united opposition from other employee groups that have formed a majority bloc. This shift comes as tensions rise before the upcoming council vote.
Elon Musk has long opposed unionised labour, reinforcing his stance at the Grünheide plant. Meanwhile, Tesla has begun scaling up battery cell production earlier than expected, while also planning to increase output of the mid-size Model Y SUV—particularly if regulators approve more supervised Full Self-Driving features.
The factory's workforce has shrunk to around 10,700 employees, down from 12,415 in early 2024, a reduction of roughly 1,700 since operations expanded. Despite these challenges, Tesla's next major products—the Cybercab, the Optimus humanoid robot, and the electric Semi truck—remain key priorities for the company.
The dispute at Tesla's German plant now hinges on the upcoming works council election and the legal fallout from the recording. With IG Metall pushing for union rights and management resisting, the outcome could shape labour relations at the Grünheide site. The factory's future production plans, including expanded Model Y output and new vehicle launches, may also be influenced by the ongoing conflict.
