Sykell's Reusable Plastic Packaging Could Revolutionize Grocery Storage
Sykell has launched the world's first reusable plastic packaging system for pre-packaged foods. Called Einfach Mehrweg Prefill, it covers five product groups, including salads, ready meals, and dairy. The company claims the design will help food producers meet stricter waste regulations while keeping food fresh for longer.
The new Prefill system uses Ultrahigh Barrier and Re-Sealable technologies to lock in freshness. Containers, available in 500 ml and 1500 ml sizes, can be returned at 6,000 drop-off points across Germany. Shoppers deposit them in reverse vending machines, streamlining the reuse process.
Sykell has also made the packaging compatible with its Circular ERP platform. This software helps businesses track and manage reusable containers within a shared pool. The system is already in use for takeaway food, but the Prefill expansion marks its first move into pre-packaged grocery items.
The company will present the solution at Biofach in Nuremberg from 10th to 13th February 2026. Meanwhile, other firms are pushing similar schemes: a major retailer has adopted Returnity's The Last Box for deliveries, while Unilever, P&G, and L'Oréal have backed a city-wide reuse trial led by Reposit and the Plastic Waste Coalition.
Einfach Mehrweg Prefill aims to cut single-use plastic in supermarkets by offering durable, refillable storage containers. The system's rollout coincides with tighter EU packaging rules, giving manufacturers a way to comply ahead of deadlines. Return points and digital tracking are already in place to support widespread adoption.
