Switzerland's 'Bankruptcy King' Collapsed 61 Firms in a Decade

A new study has revealed the scale of serial business failures in Switzerland over the past decade. One individual, dubbed the 'bankruptcy king,' drove 61 companies into insolvency—far more than any other. The findings also highlight broader trends in corporate collapses across the country.

Between 2013 and 2023, 2,440 individuals were linked to at least three business bankruptcies each. Most of these so-called 'serial bankrupts' oversaw exactly three failed firms. However, one person stood out: a single figure responsible for 61 insolvencies across multiple industries. His last known residence was Geneva.

Two others followed closely behind, with 51 and 46 bankruptcies to their names. The study only counted individuals who held managerial or decision-making roles in the collapsed companies. Limited liability companies (LLCs) made up over half of all insolvency cases. Joint-stock corporations accounted for 37 percent, while sole proprietorships represented around 7 percent. The construction sector suffered the most, particularly in site work and finishing trades. Geographically, the canton of Zurich had the highest concentration of 'bankruptcy specialists,' with 337 individuals identified.

The data exposes a pattern of repeated corporate failures tied to a small group of managers. With LLCs and construction firms most affected, the findings may prompt closer scrutiny of business leadership practices. Authorities now have a clearer picture of where and how these insolvencies cluster across Switzerland.
