Swiss stock market pauses near record highs as Novartis launches heart care initiative
The Swiss stock market showed little movement on Thursday, holding steady after a near-record high the day before. Trading remained flat as investors adjusted their positions in key pharmaceutical shares. Meanwhile, Novartis announced a new healthcare initiative in Germany aimed at improving patient outcomes.
On Wednesday, the Swiss Market Index (SMI) approached a fresh peak of around 13,600 points. But by Thursday, the market settled near 13,500, indicating a period of consolidation.
Profit-taking in heavyweight stocks like Novartis and Roche weighed on the index. Both companies carry significant influence in the SMI, and their share price adjustments limited further gains.
Away from trading, Novartis Germany revealed a partnership with the Ambulantes Herzzentrum Kassel. The collaboration focuses on an innovative care model for patients undergoing catheter-based heart procedures. The goal is to help 600 participants achieve target cholesterol levels within a year.
The programme will standardise monitoring and treatment of elevated LDL cholesterol. It covers the full patient journey—from initial diagnosis through therapy and aftercare. This pilot aligns with Novartis' wider push to modernise care structures in Germany.
The SMI remains close to recent highs, though profit-taking in major pharmaceuticals has slowed momentum. Novartis' new healthcare initiative in Germany targets improved lipid management for heart patients. The pilot phase will track progress over the next 12 months.
