Swiss food delivery Smood shuts down after years of losses to Uber Eats
Swiss food delivery service Smood will close permanently by the end of April. The Migros-owned company announced the decision after failing to find a sustainable way forward. Over 400 jobs will be lost as a result of the shutdown.
Smood has faced growing financial and operational challenges in recent years. Since its peak between 2020 and 2021, the service has steadily lost market share to rivals like Uber Eats and Just Eat. By 2025-2026, its delivery network and restaurant partnerships had shrunk significantly compared to larger competitors.
A consultation process explored possible solutions but concluded that no viable path existed to keep the business running. Despite the closure, the app and delivery operations will continue normally until the final shutdown date.
The company has agreed on a social plan for affected staff. This includes severance payments, lump-sum compensation, and contributions toward further training. Around 370 couriers, working across more than 25 Swiss cities, will be impacted alongside other employees.
The shutdown marks the end of Smood's operations after years of declining competitiveness. All remaining services will cease by late April. The company's exit leaves Uber Eats and Just Eat as the dominant players in Switzerland's food delivery market.
