Sweetgreen's co-founder exits as the chain fights to regain growth momentum

Sweetgreen, the fast-casual chain known for fresh, healthy meals, has served over 300 million dishes since its launch. Co-founder Nathanial Ru will leave his role as chief brand officer in early 2026, marking a shift for the company. Despite its growth, the brand has faced financial challenges since going public in 2021. Nathanial Ru, alongside Jonathan Neman and Nicolas Jammet, opened the first Sweetgreen in 2007. Their goal was simple: offer nutritious, freshly made food in a fast-food setting. Over time, the chain expanded to 280 locations across more than 150 cities.

The company has struggled financially since its 2021 IPO, with no profits reported as a public business. Same-store sales also dropped by 9.6% in the third quarter of 2023. To counter this, Sweetgreen is now boosting protein portions and highlighting its high-quality ingredients.

A key part of its strategy involves showcasing local farmers and suppliers. This move aims to reinforce trust in its food sources. Expansion continues too, with plans for 18 new Infinite Kitchen locations in 2023—including the first with a drive-thru.

Ru has described building Sweetgreen as a dream realised with the help of its team. His departure in 2026 will close a chapter for the brand he helped create. Sweetgreen remains focused on growth, despite recent financial setbacks. The chain’s push for larger portions and supplier transparency reflects efforts to win back customers. With new restaurant formats on the way, the company is betting on innovation to secure its future.
